All of the information contained within these pages are also available on the opening screen when you run the game.

• Installing Fog of War Chess
  • Simply download the game from wsims.com.  It is a fully self-contained application and can be ran from anywhere.
• Creating a New Game
  • Click on "Create New Game".
  • Fill in "Your Name" and a "Game Name".  If you are behind a firewall or wish to create a "private" game, you will need to set an appopriate port.  See my instructions on adapting your firewall for my games.  If you are not behind a firewall, just type in '0' for the port.  If you want this to be a "private" game, click on "Do not register this game to the internet" and supply your opponent with your machine address and the port the game will be on.
  • Click on "Create Game"!
• Joining a Game
  • Click on "Find Game".
  • Enter "Your Name" and your "Client Port" (see above for information on this).  Either manually type in the "Host Address" and "Host Port" if you know it, for click "Refresh List" to find a registered internet game.
  • Click "Join Game"!
• Starting the Game
  • Select a resolution from the list.  Make sure you know your computer's limitations when you select this.
  • If you want the game to run in a window (instead of running full screen), select "Windowed".
  • The shadow will be low resolution by default.  If you machine is faster than 1 GHz and you have more than 32 megabytes of video memory, you can safely select "Hi-res Shadows".
  • If you created the game, make sure your opponent has selected the options te wants.
  • After both players are ready, the creator (or host) can press "Start Game"!
  • The host will start the game and will be the blue player.

• Playing Fog of War Chess
  • Concept
    • Play chess in the same way, but you can only se where you can move.
  • Movement
    • Pieces move as they always have in chess.
    • The places you can move by the rules will be visible.  (See the visibility rules and their exceptions.)
    • The places you can move are marked with yellow discs.  The places you can capture are marked with red discs.
  • Visibility
    • All pieces see the square they are on, the squares they can move to, the squares they can capture, and (most importantly) the squares of friendlies who are "blocking" it.  This last aprt matters most for capturing.
      • Exceptions
        • Paws see the three squares in front of them at all thies.
        • The king has a warning system.  The squares around him and the square he is on will be marked with red boxes if the king cannot move there.
        • If the king is in check, the pieces that could capture him are also visible.
        • If a piece cannot move a certain direction because its movement will put the king in jeopardy, the positions will still be visible.
          • For example, a rook that is between your king and the opponents queen will still see in the directions that would otherwise be illegal movements.
          • The square will also be marked with a purple box to signify that its moves have been altered.
  • Capturing
    • Pieces move as they always have in chess.
    • When you capture a piece, you will gain visibility to all of the squares that the captured piece could see.
      • See visibility rules for more clarification on what these will be.
      • This will last until you next turn ends, so document any new information you find as soon as possible.
  • End Game
    • When one player only has a king and the other player has one of the following conditions, the game will be listed as a draw:
      • King
      • King and one Knight
      • King and nay number of Bishops on the same color square.
    • The game can also be ended early by two commands:
      • Both players type '/draw' in the chat window (without the quotes).
      • One player types '/surrender' in the chat window (without the quotes).

• Visual Clues
  • White or silver squares - Visibilities
  • Dark red squares with fog over them - Parts of the board you cannot see
  • Red box - Movement of the king there would cause a check or mate.
  • Purple box - Movement of tha tpiece has been limited due to checkmate conditions.
  • Yellow disc - Where the currently selected piece can move.
  • Red disc - Where the currently selected piece can capture.
  • Blue flag up - Blue player's turn.
  • Green flag up - Green player's turn.

• Interface Instructions
  • [F2] - Toggle numbering system around the edge of the board.
  • [RIGHT MOUSE CLICK] - Add piece and location to "War Notes".
  • [ARROW KEYS] - Move around, up, and down the board.
  • [PAGE UP] - Zoom in.
  • [PAGE DOWN] - Zoom out.
  • [F7] - Toggle FPS and the game state.
  • [F8] - Emergency exit key.
  • [F11] - Take a scren shot.
